An emerging AFL star has been named Manunda Hawks’ inaugural number one season ticket holder for 2023.

Gold Coast Suns midfielder Alex Davies enjoyed a stellar junior career at the Hawks, claiming the club’s Rising Star award in 2018 before moving south to pursue his AFL dreams.

The talented ball-winner played two seasons of senior football in the AFL Cairns competition, featuring in an elimination final in his second year.

Remarkably, Davies juggled state representative basketball commitments through much of his time at Manunda before making the decision to focus on footy full time.

When approached to be the no. 1 ticket holder, the humble former Hawk said he was honoured to be recognised by the club.

“I still follow the team week-to-week and keep in touch with the boys during the season,” Davies said.

“The club will always be special to me and to be acknowledged this way so early in my career is a great surprise.”

Former Hawks men’s senior coach Marc Harbrow said the once gangly junior looks set to turn into a contested ball beast at the top level.

“From his first game with us he didn’t look out of place,” Harbrow said.

“He had great skills but his attitude was second-to-none.

“The type of player we always thought he’d grow into was Scott Pendlebury. He was good in the air, physical and hard at it when the ball hit the ground.

“He comes from a really good family who were a really strong in supporting him, so it’s nice to keep that connection.”

Davies is part of a list of talented Manunda juniors who have gone on to play AFL football in recent decades.

Among them are Jarrod Harbrow (Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast), Courtenay Dempsey (Essendon), Sam Michael (Brisbane and Essendon) and Jack Bowes (Gold Coast and Geelong).

Now in his third season at the top level, Davies hopes to become a regular starter in the Suns midfield this year — and he’ll have the Hawks back him every step of the way.
